Hey guys, a friend of mine was asking me about this earlier. I'm accepted to med school, but I didn't really have an answer for him since I only interviewed at 2 schools (and I assume dental would be a little different from med)

He's a muslim and has a fairly long beard (around fist-length) for religious reasons. He tries to keep it as well groomed as possible, but when you get to that length sometimes its kind of difficult. He said he just wore a beard net (as did his dentist since he was also muslim) when he was shadowing

He was wondering if that might hinder him in interviews / prevent him from being accepted? And if there was a way he could explain himself

His beard is something in between those 2 pics. What do you guys think I should tell him?

I definitely don't think he should shave it off, but it should be very well groomed, no question about that.

I'm very sure interviewers understand especially if it has to do with religion. I saw a few people at my interviews with beards. So I'm sure its 100% okay.

I'm Muslim too and my initial thought was to have him shave it, but I saw quite a few people wearing yamakas and it was acceptable, this is America, why not a beard? First pic looks good second pic looks a little odd (personal preference)

It's because the second pic doesn't have a mustache so the beard looks fake lol but I agree. First pic looks fine

I saw several people at my interviews who had beards like that. I would just be sure that it is well groomed.

When did "fist-length" become an acceptable way to measure beard length
"nice beard chad" "thanks man its 3.5 fist-lengths"

Lolll probably should've elaborated. So in Islam the majority opinion is that its impermissible to clean shave at all. The recommended beard length (sunnah) is fist length. After that, one can trim the rest of as he pleases. Some say that fist length is mandatory, others say its just recommended. The only definite is that one should never clean shave, but hes more of the fist length mandatory opinion, so he keeps it that long

Lol, being Muslim myself, I understood the "fist length" measurement right away, didn't think it would come across as weird to some lol. But never imagined this discussion would be happening on a predental forum of all places

hahaha yeaaa, creeping shariah O_O loll jk

But yeah glad to know it wouldn't detract from the interviews. I feel kinda bad for trimming mine down a bit before my interviews xD

The second pic looks like the dude taped it on. The length is fine, tell him to dress nicely and be groomed.
