Its highly variable depending on the program and specialty.
While I took less in-house call as a senior resident, when I was Chief I was never allowed to turn my pager off except 1 weekend a month when someone else covered the service for me. That meant no having a couple of glasses of wine or going very far from the hospital in case I was needed to come back in, and of course I had to be available to answer pages from the junior residents at all hours. I also worked a fair bit of hours because I was responsible for making sure the junior residents were under 80 hrs, but if there was still work to be done, it was up to me to stay and do it (however, I still worked less than I did as a junior resident which was in the pre-80 hr days).
As a junior resident, when I was not in house on call I was allowed to have my pager off...although some have posted here, they are never allowed to turn it off even when not on call.
So have a talk with your intern friend and she what his/her expectations are for the schedule. Some programs are call q-whatever for the entire residency, and in others the amount of in house call and service coverage decreases as they become more senior. My experience above will not necessarily be yours and I was able to have a long-term relationship throughout residency (albeit with another surgeon who understood my schedule).
