That's a long vacation.....I would classify such a long leave as a sabbatical.

I'm interested in taking 8mo-1 yr off post graduation (so I'm not really leaving a company).
If I then want to apply to a completely different pharmacy later, am I obligated to disclose my reasons for taking such an extended break? If yes, don't employees have some sort of privacy rights without resorting to making something up?
If I want to work for the same chain (different pharmacy store), am I obligated to disclose my reasons for taking such an extended break? (let's say I was just an ordinary staff pharmacist, so I'm not hounding for a particular sweet position).

When I worked at Walgreens as an assistant manager we had a pharmacist that worked 6 months a year. The other six months she lived in Greece with her husband. I am unsure of the details though...I don't know if she had to be rehired or go on a leave of absence every year or how that really worked out, but she had been doing it for a few years when I came into the store. FYI this was at a busy 24 hour store that needed the extra pharmacist. For the 6 months she was not there they used floater pharmacists.
I thougth Zpack's job was a long vacation.

I'm sure you work very hard. You just don't post your work-related stuff. You post primarily vacation stuff. Hence your 3% remark in the other post. (though that still gives you 90+/- really good ones.😉)
You give me too much credit. If I posted my work stuff...it would almost be like talking to myself....no one would find it exciting enough... my work entails...contract pricing regarding GPO, rebate, calculating cost savings..justifying formulry switches through clinical and financial reasonings..and endless spread sheets with revenues..and patient days...cost of goods sold..salary...inventory. And traveling to semi non exotic places.
And endless conference calls giving reports and receiving reports....discussing strategies...
Like upstate NY?
Upstate NY wasn't the destination... it was part of the route. Spent the weekend in Coastal Maine...then stopped off at some accounts.. drove through beautiful New Hampshire then Vermont...ferried over to NY to go to Montreal... upstate NY on 87 isn't very pretty.
Its actually pretty boring. As far as long vacations go, usually a leave of absence is needed to off for that long. With the shortage of pharmacists, im sure many chains would be more than willing to hire you back quickly!
