I've been browsing the match lists a bit and noticed that in general, a lot of students tend to do their residencies at the hospitals associated with the school. I'm just wondering whether this is more due to the fact that A) med students tend to want to do their residencies at the same hospital as their med school rotations or because B) residency programs tend to selectively favor students from their corresponding med schools. I realize that it's probably due to both of these reasons, but which is the primary factor? If any current med students could offer some insight, that'd be great!

I would guess the primary factor to be VISIBILITY!

For medical students at school U of A, it is much easier to get in touch with people at the residency department of their interest at their school hospital and perhaps even score a clerkship with them. This would mean that if they are stellar in their performance and rank the program high enough on their list, their odds of matching there would be really high as the residency directors have actually SEEN their work, as opposed to someone from Uni of B with almost the same stats etc. Also, LORs are REALLY important for residency directors, so the fact that they KNOW the person they are reading a letter from is another plus.

On the other hand, let's not forget that with the hectic life of students, not many of them would be interested in moving away (for some, AGAIN) especially if they have already setteled in and like their school locale.

Hope it helps ~ Good luck!
