So I have a 3.65 currently, I am only a sophomore, and I was a math major, but am switching my major to Kinesiology and am expecting my gpa to go up as I do not have to take any of those extremely difficult mathematics classes anymore (linear algebra, diffy q). I think that I will be able to obtain about a 3.8 at the end of my junior year based on how I have been doing, so I am not too worried about my gpa.
I feel like a majority of getting into medical school these days is demonstrating interest in the field, so I just wanted advice on what extracurriculars I should get involved more/less in. What I have done so far is:
-Attended 2 conferences where I have presented on sexual health/women's health and how it pertains to college students. I obtained an award for best in my category for one of these conferences.
-I am going to Africa this summer with one of my professors, she recruited me because she wants my help discussing women's health and hygiene issues with the young children. We will be working at HIV clinics.
-I volunteer pretty regularly at an assisted living home(about 10 hours a month - 50 hours so far).
-I shadow doctors very regularly during the summer (I have done about 50 hours of shadowing so far).
-I had a paid internship at a women's clinic near my school where I interviewed patients to see how they felt about their appointment in order to see how we could make their experience more pleasurable. It is user experience stuff which I feel like is super important these days.
-I am a resident assistant in my dorm and I plan on doing this for a few more years.
-I am working on getting my CNA or EMT cert this summer.
-I just got approved to present my sexual health program at a middle school, so hopefully I will be able to work on spreading that to other schools as well, as that is what I am super passionate about. 🙂
-I am President of the Math Club on campus, but probably will not be as involved in the club later on as I realize that my passion is not as much in math as it is in other areas.
-I was a camp counselor this summer where I worked one week with students who struggled with IBS. I am working on starting a branch of Camp Kesem at my school as well (a camp for kids whose parents have cancer).
-I am not sure if it matters.. But I absolutely love running as well and am hoping to run a half marathon in the next semester!
I had the opportunity to do research.. but honestly, research in a lab does not sound appealing to me. I absolutely love science, but I love people more! The work I am doing in Africa will be technically counted as a research project... so my question is, do you think my extracurriculars are that of those of someone who could get into medical school if I continue with the types of activities I am doing?
Is lab research really a necessary component these days? Do you think these experiences are enough? How could I increase my extracurriculars?
I am just extremely passionate about medicine.. particularly sexual health. The field could be so advanced, but it is not due to it being such a controversial issue! I would love to be able to practice medicine and work toward helping those infected with HIV or other STIs/STDs.
I would greatly appreciate the advice to help me achieve my dream🙂 Thanks a ton!
