Here’s the deal,
I am currently in second year and I have the following options this summer (vacation from May-August), but I don’t know what to do, whether I should stay here, or go home, or do some of the following. Could you please offer advice on priority and importance to medical school application, as well as taking into consideration my sanity during this process?
Options:
May 26th – July 3rd (Physics II) MTWTHF from 10 AM – 2 PM + 2days/3 hour lab
May 26th – Mid-July (Urology Research) MTWTHF Times not set; can also be any time during summer.
May 18th – August 18th (EMT-B Course) TWF from 6PM-10PM
Volunteer/Work – Any given time
Study for MCAT – Any given time
May 26th – August 18th BIOCHEM & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY – THESE COURSES ARE A HEAVY LOAD AND WILL TAKE MY FULL ATTENTION, but – they will aid me during my third year (lighten the load).
I hope to write the MCATS before the application for Med-school opens for the next year, but I don’t know if it’s worth that I stay the whole summer away from home. Is EMT-B an important part of the application? Will it my application “amazing” if I log hours in an ambulance? Should I just do Research/Physics for one half of the summer, go home and study for the MCATS? Or should I take the EMT-B course the whole summer, do physics, research, emt-b, and work? (heavy load)?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I second the Corona.

I would either go for the EMT-B or the Biochem/Molecular Bio options. It depends on which part of your application you think needs the most work. EMT will help your app, especially if your grades aren't so hot, but it won't necessarily look amazing.

But if your 3rd year is looking really painful, you might want to knock out the Biochem, etc. in the interest of your sanity. You don't want to end up burned out before you even apply to med school.

I would do the biochem but not the EMT-B. Personally opinion of mine, maybe you would love to be an EMT-B but I would not, I'd rather just get biochem over with.

I'd do the physics/research (assuming you're interested in urology?) for part of the summer, and then for the second half, shadow some docs in your hometown and take a break. This next year will be busy so enjoy your time off!
It's not so much the EMT schools like to see as much as some sort of certification combined w/ lots of clinical experience. CNA (nurse aid; I do it on an oncology floor and love it), AUA (advanced unlicensed assistant/patient care tech, step above CNA, you get to do wound changes and stuff), MA (medical assist; work in Drs office) would all work too. (I'd go for AUA and work in an ER, you'll get the excitement of trauma, but will get to see physicians in action and its easier to work part time (as an EMT its pretty impossible to work PT).

Ok...

So here's what I was thinking...

Why don't I stay May - July 3rd doing Research + Physics II... then July - August/September taking a course and studying for the MCATS, and forget about EMT. Is this enough?

If you have finished the pre-reqs already, I would start studying for the MCAT and take it as soon as you are ready. Then do volunteer work or something else that doesn't require set times afterward. A good MCAT score can not be beat. Easily the most important thing when applying.

You guys are all nuts.
