I am currently in Memphis, TN and work full time 40-45 hours and plan on applying to D.O. school this coming cycle. I have lots of experience and will likely get great MD letters from my LOR writers. However, I am having trouble finding D.O. physicians to shadow. I checked out the iLEARN Mentor Program but it was not helpful as the nearest listed physician was an hr and a half out from where I live. I googled D.O's and found like 2 people who I will try cold calling in the next few weeks. However, does anyone know of any available for shadowing and if not can they comment on if its ok to get a D.O fellow/resident letter because I have worked with 1 or 2 on research projects at a cancer center last year. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, nontrad needing help.

You want to try and shadow a DO who will show you how OMT is conducted since that is the defining difference between MD and DO physicians nowadays. Here's one:

Nilesh D Nangrani, DO

Family Medicine

Primary Address
Methodist North
3960 New Covington Pike
Memphis TN 38128
(901)516-5946

The LOR from the DO working with you on the research should be fine. Why don't you try asking them if they know any other DO's in the area?

I would contact LMU DCOM and see if they can put you in contact with someone on their faculty or possibly a graduate.

Sorry for delayed response - had to go to a weekend work conference. Thanks for the suggestions. And yes, I do know OMT is the true difference aside from philosophical approach to patients (seen demonstrations in undergrad at premed conferences and I've read Norman Gevitz's The D.O's and A. T. Still's philosophy on Osteopathy). I just needed help in finding people in the Memphis area to shadow that are D.Os rather than MDs. the only reason I hadn't asked the fellows is because I hadn't really talked to them since working with them last year.

@Shinobiz11 I will contact LMU as well. Hopefully they will be able to direct me to physicians I can shadow on this side of the state.
