Hi all-

I had initially posted this in the sticky up top but then I realized the first time I read that thread was when I posted. I figured others might not look at it too often, either. Ergo, a new post here. Sorry for the flotsam.

So far this forum out of all of SDN has been most helpful. I've decided I need to take an SMP and I was wondering what some people's opinions were. My stats (via AACOMAS):

sGPA-2.71
cGPA-2.85
MCAT-27R

ECs-Paramedic ~6 years, 300+ hours shadowing MD/DO, some volunteering (though I plan on adding to that) in both clinical and non-clinical settings, ACLS and Wilderness First Aid instructor.

Note my undergrad was a non-science FWIW...

My plan right now is to retake a class I did badly in (C-) and take an upper division bio class this spring in addition to applying to an SMP for Fall of 2010. I'm interested only in osteopathic schools and as such have looked closely at Midwestern's program in Glendale, AZ. Where else could I be looking? EVMS and U-Cincy seem cool but am I even a plausible candidate?

Also, I did apply this cycle and got two interviews and, surprise, two rejections. Of course I got loads of rejections from other schools without an interview.

Opinions and suggestions welcome. I'm also soliciting additional ECs for my application as well so feel free to chime in with those.

Thx!

Most SMPs have a 3.0 cut off, I think the SMP at EVMS has a 2.75 cut off, but I'm sure that most of the accepted applicants have well over a 3.0. If I were you, I would do a post-bacc to improve your grades. There is a post-bacc program at LECOM and with your stats, I think you have a shot. After completion of the program, most people that apply to LECOM are accepted. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I am aware that my overall GPA is suboptimal so that's why I'm here. Anyhow, I have heard about the LECOM postbacc but I haven't found any supporting evidence on their site. According to their site:

Successful completion of the Health Sciences Program does not guarantee admissions to the medical or pharmacy programs at LECOM. The College will give consideration for interviews to successful Health Sciences candidates who meet all other admissions standards and requirements.

Thanks again. Any other info is appreciated.

Bump. Anyone else with any input? Thanks!

I am currently a student in the Master of Arts in Biomedical sciences at Midwestern-AZ. I think that you should be able to get into the program with your stats even though our class average was a 3.2 cGPA. Just apply early is my advice. I got a 4.0 first quarter and got an interview the next week with AZCOM. If you are interested in getting into AZCOM, you should really look into this program. It's only a 1 year intensive program and they also have a 2 year MS program that focuses on research the second year but a lot of people don't do it because of the extra year of tuition. Let me know if you have any questions.
