Looking for Honest Answers: Did anyone with an M.D. acceptance and D.O. acceptance still choose D.O???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a first time applicant this cycle and have no acceptances yet, but I decided to ONLY apply DO- not because of my stats or ECs but because I truly would prefer to be a DO! I love the lens they use to view the human body and mind as a whole! I also love OMM and how it is focused on healing the body, not just giving a quick fix to the problem only for it to possibly arise again. I personally think it is important for physicians to consider a patient’s lifestyle when determining the best treatment option, too. I have a kinesiology background so that definitely plays a part in my values as a future physician!

*This is all just opinion and I know many prefer MD (and I am not in anyway putting down MD because they are amazing physicians too!), but I hope this is somewhat what you were looking for 🙂

I find it amusing that you think MDs dont do this.

Have you seen OMM?

Please reread your post then. The idea that DOs somehow treat a patient more holistically than an MD is a complete myth.

Yes I worked in an OMM clinic this summer. I wasn’t saying anything bad about MD- I don’t know much about MD because I’ve really only been exposed to osteopathy! I deleted my post- I’m sorry for saying anything that may have been taken wrong. That wasn’t my intention at all I was just stating what I knew about DO.

It’s exactly the same except for OMM.

Every year, I get students with MD accepts and they still choose to come to our school. Mostly, people with accepts to the state school OR an MD school far away from family, but we still win them over.

So yes, it happens and no, it's not common.

I know two people in my class who did this. One claims he got into UofM but wanted to stay close to home so he stuck with a DO school. Totally possible but I call BS.

Second one believes in the "DO philosophy" and has occasionally said some poor things about MDs. That type of stuff is annoying nonsense.

As is stated 1000 on this forum every week: go MD if you can.

I can name a handful of people at my school that also had an MD acceptance and came to my school.

However, it gets a little tricky since we go through the match algorithm of TMDSAS. If they ranked our school first, we may never know if they would have been accepted to other MD schools where they interviewed.

It happens probably more commonly than you would think, but probably less than common in the traditional sense.

If we go by the scale of common, uncommon, rare, and exceptionally rare, it would probably fall somewhere in the lower region of uncommon.

It’s probably very rare. I’m sure it happens though. Some people love OMM, want to be licensed in it and implement it in the way they practice medicine.

I also think maybe tuition has something to do with it too? I know DO schools are generally more expensive but, there was a thread on here not long ago that compared how much debt someone would be willing to acquire to go MD vs DO.

Personally for me, I don’t really care. I’d prefer MD Bc it’s easier to get a competitive specialty and my in state MDs are much cheaper.

This is likely a reason my school has a disproportionately high number.

Our in-state yearly tuition (including all fees) clocks in around 18K in-state and 30K OOS.

*reads enviously *

I’ve met some who’ve gone DO over MD. They’ll all tell you it’s a mistake.

Proximity to family and cost can be a draw. If you're like 30 and want to go FM asap and live near you're SO/family it might be a good choice.

Some old DOs do love the holistic stuff, but it's such a vague touchy feely notion how do you even prove or measure it? And I can't think of anyone excited to do OMM for 3 hours the week of an exam.

Yea, I've actually met a couple of them already in my entering class this year. One even got into one of their state MD schools, but went to our DO school in a different state because they "liked the fit and curriculum better". Needless to say I thought this was a bad decision but kept that to myself
