Hi everyone,
I'm MS 3 considering PM&R looking for aways to do for my 4th year. I would say I'm slightly below average applicant from MD program.
Ideally, I would like to do away at a place where I would actually have a chance of matching. I've heard some programs tend to offer interviews/look favorably towards students who did an away at their program vs others that do not really give you a leg up for rotating with them. Ones I've heard that look favorably to those who did aways were Mayo and UCLA.

Any other programs that tend to favor students who did a rotation within their program?

Thanks!

I’d be surprised if the significant majority of programs do not value audition rotations. Get always at the programs that you would at least on paper want to attend. It will likely improve your chances to match as long as you do well on the audition.

Keep in mind that there’s competition involved in getting auditions at the good programs. So when an applicant matches to a place like Mayo after doing well on an audition rotation...did they match because of the audition or because they were a good applicant to begin with? Probably both. Regardless...auditions can help set yourself apart.

Thanks so much for your post! I also have some specific questions about applying to PM&R, would it be ok if I PM you?
thanks alot 🙂

Check out the spreadsheet from this year

Seems like one program where people noted they did aways and were not offered interviews was Utah.

If you are a hard worker, play nice, don't look for the first chance to bolt during the day, look for ways to contribute to the team, then you will have the residents and attendings that you worked with vouching for you and trying to get you a high rank. If you don't think you can do those things for the whole month, or typically have gotten poor evaluations on your core rotations, you won't do yourself any favors. There have been a fair number at our program that looked great on paper and hurt their chances by an audition, since they came off lazy or disinterested.
