What is a good, free, internet-based email to use for applications? I've tried Yahoo which seems to work well, but I prefer something that also forwards email to Microsoft Outlook. Thanks!

You can use Yahoo. Download something called YahooPOPS! at http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/

It's a very small program that allows you to use Yahoo as a POP3 email account (allows you to download to Outlook).

I use it without any problems.

I used hotmail when I applied.

Just becareful with these free email services that they aren't screening anything out as junk mail. Some emails from the schools are mass emails and if your settings are wrong then that mail may be sent to your junk mail pile. Also DO NOT give your email address to anyone else but the med schools or else you'll start getting spam and this will always keep your mailbox full and consequently schools will not be able to send you anything.
