Quick stats recap: 3.2 cumulative and 3.0 science (good upward trend with last 4 semesters being 4.0 or near it). 24AA/25TS/23PA (RC20 and nothing below 20) on my retake. About 150 hrs of dental shadowing/volunteering. Volunteered at a hospital and pharmacy as well. Graduated in 2012. Also this was my 2nd time applying to D school.

Applied to 14 schools. 2 pre-decemeber interviews and 1 post-december interview (scheduled for late January).

Flat out rejection via email for NYU even though I was interviewed early in the cycle in mid-august. I thought I rocked the interview because the interviewer really seemed to like my dry humor (I wasnt trying to be funny it just flowed from the convo) and old-fashioned views of family life, she even complimented me about it. And Nova waitlisted me, they made it seem like Im high up on the list though. But Im not optimistic because waitlists seem to me like a soft rejection. Feel the same for the post-dec invite for LECOM, Im going to go but Im doubtful.

I really hate having to write this but it seems I have to.

I'll have to reapply for the 3rd time this June 2014.

I didnt take any classes this semester; I got a minimum wage job at CVS as cashier/stockboy. I'm heavily considering in enrolling in 21 credits of undergrad classes for spring semester and bust out even more As to boost my 3.2 to 3.31 cumulative and 3.02 to 3.20 science (verified with gpa calc, its possible). Maybe thatll help me in the next cycle. Having work exp should also help.

Will also call NYU and Nova to ask about my status, why I didnt get accepted, how to improve and also to state my burning desire to attend their schools. Long shot but I lose nothing by trying. Im also visiting family in NYC so I might also drop by NYU for a face to face discussion.

So I need some feedback. Opinions/advice/support, whatevers on your mind.

Hours of shadowing? And 100 hours of only dental volunteer work? Do you have any volunteer work outside of health related fields?

Also, I see you're from Seattle. Did you apply to UW? What's your status with them?

About 150 hrs of dental shadowing/volunteering (watched dentists and helped a bit here and there) at a dental school clinic and a private office.

The volunteering at the (privately owned) pharmacy was more on the business side of things rather than the health, I made note of that in my app.

I mentioned some of the charity events I attended during my membership of my school's predent society.

No interview from UW, dont really mind though. Id prefer to go to another state for D school.

Wow, my stats are similar to yours, and im applying next year.... this is making me nervous!

Use that nervousness. Do everything I did and more. Do winter semester and take as many classes possible for the whole summer semester/sessions. Dont be like me and think a high DAT in the 99.4 %ile will save you from a low GPA. Also do research, I met some guys with slightly lower stats than mine and they were rocking more interview invites than me b/c of it.

Cheers, I wish you the best of luck with that waitlist + interview.... definitely rooting for you.

On the bright side you can re-use those jaw-dropping DAT scores anytime 🙂

Best of luck for you on this cycle. Although I venture to say with that many schools you applied there has to be the ONE, I am sure something will work out in the end, if not this cycle then definitely the next.

Past couple of days my "jaw-dropping DAT scores" seem like a paper tiger. Looks promising but at the end it is ineffectual. I hope youre right about something turning up.

Earlier I talked to a committee officer at Nova and she made me feel like I may actually have a decent chance to be bumped off the waitlist in a month or two.

Does anyone know how exactly the waitlist works? Is it organized so that the earlier you had the interview the sooner youll be bumped off the waitlist? Or is it order by highest GPA or DAT to the lowest or in some other way?
