Hi,

I am a Vietnamese dentist. I'm applying to some schools of dentistry in CA. Did you take TOEFL test yet? If not yet, prepare for it right now. You can prepare for TOEFL and NBDE part I at the same time.
Good luck

Hi River, Validity,

I graduated from school of dentistry in HCM city in 1987! Maybe I am the oldest among all of you. It's my strong point and weak point too. I'm living in Santa Clara county. I've been here since 2003.

Hi everyone,

How could u guys prepare for exam? i really wanna know about the best way to study, can you guys share something about that.

And how about ECE of ur transcript? GPA, i just wanna know how they evaluate our school result. And anything we need to add as im not sure about thier evaluation and the dental school transcript of Hochiminh University so that we can be able to apply for school here.

Did you guys join any class ( kaplan...) for preparing? And books, materials?

Thank you for sharing,

Hi Meggs,
I'll explain to you why you don't see any Vietnamese dentist here:

1/ Dentists in VN have a good living. We come here because of our own situation such as follow the love one,... We don't come to the US because we love doing dentistry in the US.

2/ We have good hand skills and a good train back home, so all of us who finish partI and II before Jan/2004 passed the bench test and then the State board in Cali and practice without the need to go through schools again.

If you are living in California right now, you can make a tour and you'll see a bunch of VNese dental offices there and lots of them are VNese trained dentists.

HI everyone,

Can you answer my question?
Hi Candies, Tigger, Validity........Im living in Orange county now, wanna know
about exam and licensure in Cali. Can you guys help me, i just came here few months ago.....

Thank you so much,
🙂

Hi River2005,

Sorry I couldn't answer to you earlier. I'm a little busy these days preparing for my interviews and tests at USC and UCSF in a few weeks' time. I'm soooooo worried. 😳

As for the part 1 exam, it's not as hard as you think once you try and get into it. I recommend dental decks and Kaplan question bank. Study them at least 3 times, and you will find a lot of familiar questions in the test. Once you finish part 1 with a good score, then you can be confident to start the applying process into dental schools in California.

Uh oh, I have to go now. I tell you about the transcript evaluation process tomorrow.

😛

See ya,
T

Hi friends,

Im so happy to meet you guys here.....
Im so worry for exam, applying for school ........
Ah, why dont u guys take Part II and then go for license exam in Cali?
Why do you guy need to apply for school here?
I read dental decks, Dental anatomy is ok , but other is not same.......
So did u guys study only Kaplan and dental decks? Did you guy take Kaplan course?
Oh, GPA and applying for dental school ...........long way huh 😳 😕

Thank you so much,

Hi River 2005,

If you come to the US after 2003, you can not take Bench and license exam anymore. The ONLY way to practice dentistry is to go back to school 2 years! Yep, it's a long way to go, but I have no choice, and the more you wait, the harder it becomes. I was exactly like you this time last year, so I think I know how you feel.

For part 1, I only read dental decks carefully and got the Kaplan 1 month question bank online ($99). It took me 3 months - 12 hours a day to study for part 1, because I forgot everything from the first two years of dental school. I gave the written test last December, got 89. Not as good as I many other in this forum. If you can make it over 90, that would be very good.

Once you finish part 1, apply to dental schools as soon as possible. Ask somebody you know to go to the dental school in HCM city and get your school transcripts ( I think you have to pay 36million dong also! 😎 ). Translate them into English, together with several copies of your graduation diploma (in English and VNese) and send everything back to Dr.Anh Lan to certify them. Then send the certified copies of your graduation diploma and school transcript to ECE to be evaluated. They will transfer your score into A,B,C and figure out your GPA. I will have to warn you that because of the difference in the grading system, you will see that your GPA is extremely low, even though you may have graduated top of your class (it sucks!!!). But there's nothing you can do about it!!! 😡

You can ask for 3 letter of recommendation from Dr.Hung, Dr.Anh Lan and another one (preferably somebody you worked for in the dental profession). Go check the websites of the schools you want to apply to. Write statements of purpose for some schools if required....

It's a long way to go, but it is not as hard as it might look right now. I was so stressed out last year, but now I am waiting for the interviews and tests. So good luck to you, and we'll be there for you! 😍
