With the NEW Woodcock Johnson V coming out soon, I'm wondering if anyone is selling their old WJ-IV Ach and Cog? I'm interested in purchasing!
Only people I've seen use the WJ in recent years are SLPs. Who use in inappropriately. Though I don't review many LD cases, either these days.
Yeah, I've never seen it in an LD report ever nor were we taught it in graduate school.
We were taught it in grad school, but I've never seen it outside of SLP use since then.
I would've rather been taught the WSJ than the Rorschach, that's for sure!
I used it as my primary achievement test when I was doing in-school education evals. Some school districts were more used to using it (and the cognitive scale) than the comparable Weschler tests, and you have to do what you can to keep the referring LEAs happy and comfortable! We use it a lot out west.
tangentially related but I met a psychologist about a a year ago who proudly stated she only uses the WJ-III because it’s “easier for people to score higher”
Same.Ugh, we had to learn both.
I trained under one of the authors! I've only heard great things. It's wild to think that cohort of psychologists - the ones who really made measurement a science are moving on.Same.
I used subtests from the WCJ in a (one off) research study back in grad school, so It was actually useful training. I had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Woodcock years ago. He happened to sign up for the Marquette Brain Anatomy & Dissection course the same session I did. He flew out from San Diego IIRC, as going SD to Milwaukee was def a downgrade in weather.
We ended up dissection partners. Super nice guy and still sharp, even though he was into his 80s(?) back then.
Yes- they are renorming it sounds like (I have a friend who for the last two years was giving pieces of the achievement, cog, and oral language to people in different age groups and stuff for them the re-norm. My partner was one of the test subjects 😂) I’m not sure how great they will be- but I know that they are also hoping to bring it fully electronic last I heardAren't the norms for the WCJ super old, or am I missing something?
curious to hear your thoughts on the Rorschach? We have been taught that it can shed some valuable insight into thought disorders.Ugh, we had to learn both.
I'm wondering what this valuable insight would be. Can you provide an example?curious to hear your thoughts on the Rorschach? We have been taught that it can shed some valuable insight into thought disorders.
For instance, seeing cooperative movement in the card can reveal positive template for envisioning relationshipsI'm wondering what this valuable insight would be. Can you provide an example?

Yeah- regardless of whether or not it actually does what people say it does, the incremental validity (or lack thereof) does not seem to justify the extra work and risk of false positives/negatives. More direct symptom measurement does not seem as "psychological," nor does it give the user the same feeling of using some kind of secret knowledge or skill, though! It has marginal utility in thought disorders and suicidality/severe depression. Both of which, can be much more easily and efficiently identified via other methods. I have seen zero compelling data to show that the Rorschach leads to improved diagnostic accuracy or in functional outcomes over faster/cheaper/more easily accessible methods.

The patient sees the ink blot as the alien that implanted a listening device into their stomach.I'm wondering what this valuable insight would be. Can you provide an example?
