I know, I know...not a topic of urgency nor importance, BUT...
What are some "styles" out there for looking good as an intern/resident/

For example, do you like the docs with scrubs vs. dressing up in a shirt and tie.

I'm just excited about starting in June, and I want to look good to impress the ladies!!!!
and provide more than exceptional patient care, of course!

Well being into fashion myself I gotta say it sucks that noone makes designer scrubs, I have checked everywhere. When I am in private practice I will be getting mine tailored Dr. Rey style. As for clothing, if you are wearing dress clothes it shouldn't be hard to style if you know anything about fashion, it only takes a little effort.

They way you dress will depend on the service you're on, or the attending's preferences. That being said, keeping your hair in order and your breath fresh can go a long way.

Always default on the dressy side. It's that simple. As for how to be stylish at the same time...well depends on your budget. I think you can get great looking and stylish (read not old man pleated pants look) stuff at Express. It's also pretty universal and there's one in every city. My colleagues who only shop name brand at Barney's will disagree. I always thought that the shoes make the outfit though. With the long white coat all you really see is the color of pants and a glimpse of shirt and tie. Gotta get some cool shoes.

My own personal rule was no scrubs before 5 pm. After 5 while on call it just feels good to take off the tie, change your socks to some nice cottony ones and put scrubs on. I don't think that patients expect a shirt and tie at 3 am, but some would disagree. On the other hand, if you're doing IM and show up in scrubs for rounds every day, that's just sloppy. And this is done mainly by offservice people like I was (I did a TY and we did this all the time).

I'm doing Anesthesia now, so no more dressing up for now. We did have a grand rounds recently though where the Dept head at the Lahey Clinic said that he now has all of his anesthesiologists come in and meet the first patient in a suit and tie! Wow.

Not sure if you're joking or not (or if you're a girl), but they do make low-rise flare scrubs. I'm not kidding! I had to buy scrubs over the summer and googled "low rise scrubs" as a joke, and found a TON of them. That being said, they don't look DRASTICALLY different from regular scrubs (yes, yes, I was suckered into buying the cute scrubs).

Yeah I'm a guy and those are for women, that's the problem. I have searched everywhere in vein for low rise non-flare scrubs and fitted tops...only women have them, unless you know of a site? I will be getting mine tailored as a doctor. I want teal blue with light pink trim and light pink name embroidered. No I am not kidding, you would know that if you met me 🙂 Why can't diesel make scrubs!

wow... that is by far one of the most ridiculous comments ever.

i am gonna wear oversized scrubs every day next year while on the floor. and you better believe i'm gonna be bustin' a sag too. hopefully i'll be at a TY program so i'm not gonna care what the attendings think as long as my patients aren't dying. and when i'm in my residency, i want to be known as "scrub guy." i'm not ranking any program highly where the residents all wore shirts and ties. i think the dress code says a lot about the atmosphere of a program.

Not an intern right now or any time in the next 3 years or so, but I am torn on the whole "flare scrubs" issue. Yes, they are cuter, that's for sure. But I'm afraid that the cuter/more fashionable a female doctor dresses (within the limits of decency, obviously) the lower her perceived IQ in the eyes of her colleagues.

When I was a lab tech we used to steal scrubs from the hospital, slit the inside ankles just a little bit, and sew triangular fabric into them so that they would flare 🙂.

Wow. All I can say is.....wow.

Thanks again, SDN, for making me feel like a man's man.

Go ahead and buy the low rise flares, but i'll be laughing and pointing when they are covered in piss and blood on the first day.

Dude they only cost slightly more and they look way better. And why was my previous post ridiculous, I see nothing ridiculous about caring for ones appearance and having fashion sense... you wouldn't understand most men don't as you can see form the sad, horrible fashion of most docs out there.

I don't understand the concept of low rise scrubs. Can't you just tie them a bit lower on your hips? And won't they fall down if they are low rise? I have trouble with normal scrubs falling down, and I tie them on my waist.

And yeah, I'm female. But not the most fashion-conscious, to put it mildly 😛

If you tie them lower on your waist, the crotch sorta sags. It looks funky, especially when you ALREADY have short legs!!!

i'm am SO here to back you up!!! lol...i can't beleive they sell low rise/flare scrubs, but damn they're cute. i have a couple pairs and i look great in them. gives me more confidence when i'm running through the halls saving lives!! pish posh to all the nay-sayers. and like oyu said, one CANNOT just put the pants lower - they'll fall off!

yeah for fashion in medicine! 😀

Cost slightly more????? You don't buy scrubs as a resident, you use what's provided by the hospital because you are regularly getting scrubs dirty or changing between clinic clothes and scrubs. The point I'm making is that if you buy your own scrubs, they are just going to get dirty and then you have to clean them. Do you want some patients bodily fluids being washed in your washer?

I'm guessing that students interested in low-rise flare scrubs aren't going to be entering any specialties where they have to get their hands and scrubs dirty. There won't be any bodily fluids threatening their fashion...except semen probably.......

Ummm! The correlation between scrub type and medical specialty

Dude, I know exactly where you're coming from.

To all the haters, you have no business posting on this thread if:

1) You prefer drink tap water over bottled water.
2) You prefer 7-11 coffee over Starbucks.
3) You prefer pleated slacks over flat front slacks.
4) You prefer Levis/Wrangler jeans over Seven/Diesel denim.
5) You prefer suits with either no vents or a single vent in the back vs. double-vented, pin-stripped suits.
6) You prefer the most inexpensive dress shirt over a Thomas Pink dress shirt with a spread-collar and french-cuffs.
7) You prefer burgers/fries over a fancy restaurant.
8) The list goes on and on...

If you fit the above criteria, you will have a VERY difficult time understanding why someone wants to buy custom-tailored scrubs. To each their own. I'm out...

Um, no, my intended specialty involves getting my scrubs dirty. I'd just rather do it in style 😉.

With your DO background, you may have a hard time understanding how research is used to guide theraputics.

Huh? I thought this thread was about fashion.

Don't be surprised if with my DO background I've done more research than you, oh great one.

Carry on people, carry on...

Wow Chris's patient...that is the most biased and condescending comment that I have read from anyone on SDN. It was flat out uneducated and ridiculous. DO's take pharm and understand everything that you do about theraputics (I assume you mean chemical as opposed to manipulation).

And if there is nothing backing theraputic manipulation why are Harvard and Hopkins now have CME teaching OMM?

it may be difficult to understand if you are not a vain, superficial, brand-conscious person who prefers style over substance. by the way, did you know the flashy, newer drugs with the fancy packaging work better than the generics?

that DO comment was harsh...but i enjoyed it nonetheless.

good luck, brah.

 What a nice topic! I looooove those colorful tie/shirt combinations that guys wear nowadays, scrubs if you're toned and muscular, messy hair like you're post-call, and of course a nice smile. haha.

One more thing...I personally prefer looser scrubs on guys than tight, tailored ones....just looks more manly.

I don't see what a personal sense of style and pride in ones appearance has to do with preferring style over substance. Although I pick clothes that look nice, I also pick ones that will hold up over many uses (there's the substance for you). My car isn't fancy, but it's well-cared for and the sames goes for my home. I buy generic food at the supermarket, 'cause heck, it all tastes the same.

Caring about your appearance does not make you shallow, it just makes you vain, and that's only if you care excessively 🙂.

My fiancee's a nurse, and she says that she'd love a pair of low-rise scrubs. The regular ones come past her navel otherwise, unless she rolls them over a half dozen times. She *hates* pants with a saggy crotch (I can't stand pants that don't have some breathing room!), so she'd probably be interested in the low-rise. Also, if you sag them to your waist, they're going to run kind of long at the ankles, which gets all bunchy.

I just like baggy scrub pants, but I'd rather wear a t-shirt than a scrub top.

Appreciating the finer things in life and being vain are NOT the same.

The DO comment was ridiculous.

Words of wisdom: Never underestimate someone.

I don't see a problem with being vain. I tend to be attracted to guys who care about how they look 😎 rather than the ones who obviously couldn't care less 😱 . I am sure it works the same way for guys. 😍

These aren't exactly quality stretch fabrics we're dealing with here. Putting on scrub tops is like using a tree branch as a belt. Can't fit a human head through the neck of anything smaller than XXL, yet I can fit a small animal in the sleeves of a medium.

if you guys are not gay I don't know what gay is

i love my green scrubs... it makes me look like a ninja turtle 😉

Sheesh...you guys are tools. Whenever the total value of the clothing on my body exceeds $100, I feel like beating myself to death with the communist manifesto.

Oh. My. God 😱

🙄

well i'm going into anesthesiology and I'll probably be wearing scrubs for the rest of my life.

as an intern though, doing my prelim yr....i think i'd want to have the ability to dress up or down...depending on how I feel. Personally, unless i'm going somewhere formal, i'd rather have my tie on (but have the 'undone' look).

No, it's all about the rise from the crotch to the waistband. If you tied them lower than the crotch would be saggy.

I just think that slightly lower-rise, flared pants are more flattering on most women. The flared balances out the thighs/hips and makes your legs look thinner. The low rise makes your torso look longer.

Flared pants on men though? Eh, I just can't get into it. 🙄

You're a ******. Nothing like showing your ass for the world to see. 🙄

I have pretty big and muscular legs but a somewhat shorter inseam than the scrubs. So I always find myself rolling down the scrub pant waist. I second the low-rise concept for dudes.

Sounds like it might help to get your scrubs hemmed. Thank god that womens scrubs come in short lengths. 😀

I must include my two cents:

DOCTORSAIB: You are the gayest dude that ever posted on this. Also, I am midly embarrassed that you might be Indian (saib) as I am too, and the thought of having anything in common with you just made me a little gayer.

Personally, I like to dress nice, buy nice stuff and all that. I think french cuffs are sweet, and I think sometimes, you get what you pay for (not the diesel vs. levis - more like outback vs. mortons). But no heterosexual man, or a butch gay dude, has any business wearing flared low riding pants. That essentially makes you the lower of the duo.

BTW - dunkin donuts coffee is way better than starbucks...and cheaper

That being said, this is the finniest thread that I have ever read in 6+ years on SDN. It affirms my manhood and makes me wanna go to the local watering hole, drink some beer, and kick some ass.

You should have ended that paragraph with a super-cool last statement like "I'm out" to really drive the point home SAIB-style...... 👍
