Hey guys, a friend of mine who is a couple years younger than me wants to get into rads. She's a new grad--board certified in primary care specialty, but apparently isn't enjoying it.

Long and short, she's an awesome student, she got >260 on step 1, (i know everyone seems to get the top scores around here, but it's true), but took step 2 as an afterthought, and got 220. She says she can get rads references as well.

Would you advise this lovely lady to start doing some research now, and try to reapply to rads match next yr? Any other advice you might give? This person is a super nice, and would get along anywhere. If funding was an issue, i think she could forego af salary, i don't know.

Take care dudes! Be nice! 🙂

If she is flexible when it comes to location then she will be fine. No real need for research just tell her to apply to 30 or so programs and she will match. One question; why did she go into primary care in the first place? Maybe some soul searching will allow her to realize that primary care is what she truly loves. It's easy to get discourage if you are unhappy with a location or a specific job.

thanks DreamJob. From what I understand, she has done a fair bit of soul searching. I think she just kind of wanted to be a "complete doctor" but after that novelty wore off, wasn't thrilled anymore. She had mentioned radiology before, but apparently that quest for knowledge got in the way. She genuinely likes radiology, and the flexibility of it is appealing, for raising kids, etc.

I wish her the best of luck. Radiology is a fantastic field. I just matched this previous year and cannot wait to get started.

OP, is your friend a pediatrician? If she is, tell her to check out the ABR website. There is an alternative pathway for people who are trained in pediatrics who want to become pediatric radiologists. It leads to full board-certification but it is offered at only a few locations. I guess there is a need for ped radiologists.

Good point! 👍
