the thick portion of the ascending loop does have active transport, while the thin portion does not. we begin passively losing ions after we make the turn in the loop of Henle from descending to ascending and this contributes to the hypotonicity (in conjunction with the active transport in the thick portion) of the filtrate once it reaches the top of the ascending portion.
