I'm a junior aiming to apply to dental school next year. I currently have a 3.5 overall gpa but my science gpa is crap (around 3.0 i think)... I did bad in bio and orgo1 and now orgo2 is raping me ass.. 🙁 orgo2 makes me feel so ******ed all the time.....😡

I have some volunteer experience and I am planning to shadow a dentist soon. I have a poster and abstract publication for neuroscience and I am a presenting author at the neuroscience conference in DC. I am an anthropology major with classical chinese minor and a concentration in science research...

I'm so scared that dental schools will look at my shiity science gpa and toss my application. T_T

My top choices are NYU, columbia and stony brook.. I really wanna stay in NY. 🙁

Suppose i do decent on my DAT, how are my chances with NYU and columbia??

thanks in advance for any advice and help!!!

hi MsPineapple!!!! 🙂

Don't give up or be so discouraged!!!! Sometimes we all have to sacrifice in order to receive!!!! Maybe you should decide if staying in NY or leaving temporarily for four years is worth being a dentist???

APPLY EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE you can!!!!

Sorry I'm not giving you school specific advice.....I am just hoping to be encouraging!!!! 😛

thanks for your comment, armychick2007

ya, i'm gonna apply to everything in the eastcoast i guess.. but i really really wanna stay in ny T_T

with my stats, what DAT score do i need to have a good chance at getting in NYU?

Thanks!

If you can bring up your GPA to a 3.2 by the time you apply and you have at least a 21, I'm sure you have a decent chance at the schools who prefer east coast students (i think umdnj, uconn, definitely buffalo for ny residents). also try private ones in the midwest and west coast.

You can do it!! I didn't listen to anyone else that told me I couldn't and just worked at it. My science is below yours, and so is my overall. Just take some time off and put extra effort and preparation into the DATs.

I'm feeling the same way. I keep trying to step back from the "doing terrible" thought sometimes and thinking about what it is I really want.

Maybe I need a better group of people (ones to actually study with).
Find help/tutoring/tutoring center.. anything you can to help your chances of being where you want to be (NY, obviously).

Goodluck

you shouldnt have much trouble getting an interview at NYU provide that you have a decent DAT score.

just check out the under 3.0 club. there are plenty of people who got into dental school with GPA a lot lower than yours. you are still in your junior year you still have a lot of time to make up for what you did wrong in the past. if you really want dentistry as a career then you should buckle down and study hard for your classes, not only will it help your GPA it will help you later on your DAT. take myself for example, my undergrad GPA is not worth mentioning, but my i had a GPA that is 1.2 pts better than my undergrad GPA and no, i don't have a 4.0 now. so this just goes to show you how low it actually is. but through hard work and dedication I just gotten some interviews this year and I could not be happier!! hang in there you can do it if you want it bad enough, but def apply to more than those 3 schools you mentioned. and dont worry about where to apply yet, because it is still too early for you

~21 in AA, TS, and PA will make you competitive almost anywhere.

Are the chicks in the army like the one in your avatar?..LOL😛😛

actually, if you have a bunch of upper level bio courses, and are able to do well in them...i would reccomend dropping orgo 2, and pushin it off till sr. year first semester when you will already have applied ...can can retake if necessary your sr. year second sem... and this way your sci gpa won't drop below a 3.0 and make you look bad.

k good luck .

Doh boy fresh...I think that's some good advice. If I were doing poorly in Org II I would def. withdraw but keep going to the lectures. Study for it before taking the DAT and then retake it your senior yr. It makes the most sense to me.

Oh yea thats a great idea. I studied 3 hardcore days for the organic part on my DATs and it turned out to be my highest score on there. Then I took a look at my Ochem final and I was wondering how I couldn't do better on the final. Ochem accounts for all of my grades below an A-.

Get a tutor for orgo and see if that changes anything for you. Like everyone else said, don't lose hope and just focus on bringing your GPA up. I have a friend that always tries too hard and ends in disappointment...very smart girl, but lacks confidence...have no faith in herself whatsoever. I think believing in yourself is a key to success too and the moment you start to have faith in yourself, you will see the situation get better. Even when you don't do good, just be satisfied that you at least tried and bursted your a** off to get an A on that test.
Make sure your DAT scores are high enough, so that schools won't toss your application right away. If you can't do it during your undergrad than do some sort of masters program to bring your GPA up (make sure it don't go down, because that would def hurt your application). People have gotten in with your stats, so its not impossible!!!
Good luck!!!
