I am a junior right now planning on taking the MCAT and applying to VCOM, DCOM, WVSOM, and PCOM this coming summer. I have been shadowing a DO for a bout 1 month now and plan on staying with him for awhile. He already mentioned to me that he would be more than happy to write me a good lor. I am just curious about the whole LOR process. Do I get him to write me one and I hold on to it until its time to apply, do i re-contact him this summer when its time to submit my application, or is there a way that I can start my application now and save it? Thanks!

Well it depends. Does your school offer a committee letter? If so, then you would have the doc send your letter to the committee. I did a committee letter at my school, and all I had to do was have the letter writers send their letters to the committee, and then after the committee wrote a composite letter, they sent the entire packet (composite letter along with all the individual letters) to all the schools I was applying to. It was pretty easy.

If you're school doesn't offer a committee letter, then I guess your best bet is to set up an Interfolio account, and have the doc send your letter there. Then you can send your LORs to the various schools you apply yourself. I don't have experience with interfolio, so if someone knows that process in better detail feel free to chime in!

Setup an Interfolio account and have him send the letter to Interfolio. This way you have complete control of when the letters get sent and who they get sent too. I know I sound like an ad for Interfolio but it really saved me a lot of time during app season.
