I've got a question that seems to me would be a common one, but I haven't really seen it asked in previous posts.

I am on my first general surgery rotation of 4th year at a large surgery residency program, one that I am very interested in. I feel things have been going well and I have been working extremely hard so far. Going into it I was hoping to get a SLOR from an attending here, because that seems like a pretty standard thing to do. The problem is, most of the student's interaction at this particular program is with the residents. It is a 'resident run hospital' so to speak, and the attendings really don't have a ton of interaction with the rotating students. Plus there are a ton of students in and out of this place all the time.

My question is--is it reasonable to ask an attending with whom I am acquainted with, but have spent only a small amount of real clinical time with, for a LOR based on the residents' evaluation of my work ethic, knowledge and skills? I still have several weeks to go so maybe I'll get some more quality time, but I'm just not sure.

Thx in advance

I think your plan is a good one...give it a few more weeks. It's never easy to ask for a LOR but instructors know the students need them. Hell, they were in the same boat at some point.
