So I am having a dilemma with my LOR. I already have what I think are 4 strong letters. However, I am just finishing a summer research program, and my PI is currently writing me another one. I am not sure how long it is going to take him, but it might not be done till later in august. I expect the letter to be strong, but I am not sure that I want to wait for it to submit some of my secondaries, specifically the rolling ones.

I figure waiting for the letter to submit to rolling schools won't be that big of a deal, but I am thinking that one extra letter from someone I have worked with for only one summer might not be worth the time I would lose at rolling schools.

What is everyone elses opinion of this? Would you go ahead and submit to rolling schools (Einstein NYMC, etc) with the 4, and then wait for the letter for the others? Or would you just wait and send the letter to every school?

I'd go ahead and send them. I personally believe that LORs are a formality in this process, since everyone gets good ones. I would think that this is especially true in your case, having such strong numbers.

Get your files complete as soon as possible. I don't think an interview offer will be decided based on the content of an additional letter from your PI. That said, I know Harvard requires a letter from ALL of your PIs, but one SDNer (Anka) got in to HMS without fulfiling this requirement.

A bump 22mins after your post... relax, dude. 😉

seriously, head over to coach's for a breather or something.

after that, send the letters you have now. use the PI's as a file update in the future.
