Hi SDNers,

I am in a dilemma and was wondering if I could get anyone's input. My undergrad sends LORs in a packet, and I am still waiting on one from my clinical experience director. I've been at the NIH since graduating and since I'm across the country from my school, there are issues of snail mail with paying and processing requests to send out my LOR packet. Northwestern, UCI, and UCSD's deadlines are 9/1, 9/3, and 9/9 (for me) and while i've done the secondaries already, I'm anxious about my LORs arriving there on time because I'm still waiting for that one letter to complete my packet.

My question is...has anyone tried and been successful at asking for extensions for submitting LORs? If i explain my situation to the schools (by phone? email?) do you think they will be willing to extend my LOR deadline any? I know I should just call and ask, but I was wondering what others have experienced...

i'm pretty sure most schools are okay with LORs coming in late since we don't have that much control over them. i called UCI about it and they said it didn't matter, especially since it's still early in the process. btw, i'm from CA and working at NIH too!

I requested an extension for LORs to Northwestern by email. They were very understanding, and gave me an extension right away. Good luck.

I've never heard of a school that says no to LOR extensions.

Yeah. LOR extensions (esp. those quick ones) are pretty common if you ask for it (and have a valid reason).

Don't try for an app extension. I doubt that happens.

I called Northwestern to extend the deadline for my pre-med committee package. She said (in a tone suggesting they have had countless requests) "it's fine...you really have until Oct 1 if it's a committee letter...just get it in ASAP so we can review your file."

i asked for an extension from northwestern just by a day or two (letters should have been there by my deadline but for some reason weren't), and they sent me a generic email that said i could have until oct. 1. so i'm sure it's no problem.
