I'm considering asking a surgeon i worked with for a LOR. I will be applying to IM.

The surgeon knows I'm interested in IM and not surgery.

I'm considering asking him because I got along with him and did well on his service

Is it alright to have one from a surgical provider?

I'm considering asking him because
1) I got along with him and did well on his service
2)He is chief of staff at the hospital

Is it alright to have one from a surgical provider? if not i can replace it with a psych LOR.

My other 3 LOR will be from FM and IM.

i had a surgery letter as well...it is important to have good letters from people who speak about your strengths...obviously you will need at least one from IM and a chair's letter as well...that 3rd letter can be from anyone...i think having strong letters from people in different specialties can actually be a good thing.

1 letter from non-IM influential faculty member who knows you extremely well and will sing your praises is a great idea.
