I didn't know we need a LOR from a DO. It must be for secondaries, right?

I volunteer in a hospital 100 hours.
Mcat = 25 M
GPA = 3.9

I have everything now, except a LOR from a DO. I think I am screw big time 🙁

Is it possible for me to find a DO quick and do a shadow?? SHould I just search a DO and contact him? I don't think a doctor will just give me a chance without know me. 😕

Most schools will accept a letter from an MD. You're not screwed. Try and shadow a DO because it'll hold more weight but MD letters are just fine.

Different schools have different requirements regarding having a letter from a DO. It isn't a requirement for many schools, but it does help a lot. It definitely does tell the ADCOM that you took the time to understand Osteopathic Medicine and also shows your interest in the field.

I wouldn't say that you are screwed. Make sure you find out the requirements for the schools you applied to. They will show this information on the admissions requirements page of their website. Although the DO letter helps, not having it doesn't mean you will not get in. I know plenty of people getting into schools without one.

If possible though, you should shadow a DO now so that you can mention it during interviews (even if you don't get a letter in time). Look at a local hospital or clinic where a DO works. Approach him and let him know of your interest. In my experience, most DO's are welcome to let you shadow them.

It is very hard to find a D.O that will let you shadow due to HIPA laws.

i'm getting a LOR from a DO that i didn't shadow--i just set up a time where we could meet and talk about med school. i asked him a bunch of questions about his practice and his experiences and everything and told him about myself, too. most physicians remember how difficult this process is--especially relatively "new" doctors--and you may be able to just set up a little meeting, give them everything they'd need to write a letter for you (resume or little biography, personal statement, transcript, the date you'd need it by...i've heard of doctors even asking med school applicants to write their own rough draft and they'll edit and sign it...), and get it done. ideally, you'd shadow him/her, but i've found that's sometimes easier said than done. you've volunteered in the healthcare field so you have an idea of what you're getting into. if you can find a DO that will let you shadow--that's great--but if that doesn't come through for you just ask to meet with them. don't give up. it's worth it. you've still got time. get everything else sent in in the meantime

I wouldn't worry too much. I didn't have a DO LOR and still received interviews.

it's not that hard to find a DO. go thru the phonebook and start calling. and you dont need to shadow one to get a LOR. some will write a letter based on an interview and your PS and resume. i actually met with 3 that were willing to write a letter but would not allow shadowing. finally i found 2 to shadow. anyway, it's not that bad just get started. good luck.

thank you guys. you get my hope up.

AOA is this website, right? http://www.osteopathic.org/

I will use "Find a doctor" and start calling them. Hopefully, everything goes fine.

I had an MD LOR and got four interviews of the 8 schools I applied to so far. You want an LOR from a physician that knows you well so he/she can vouch for your ability to complete medical school and become a competent physician.

also, no offense, just a suggestion, you might want to brush up on your written english!
