LOR from Attending at the Institution?

I'm getting my letters together for next year and I'm interested to know if Letter's of Rec from an attending who works there or used to work there written specifically about that SOM help more than any old physician?

Provided they mention the connection in the letter, it might help. It would help more if they are on staff at one of the hospitals at the med school currently or so recently that they'd be remembered, and it would help even more if they know the dean of admissions. If you aren't a very competitive applicant, the positive impact of such a letter would be greater yet if the school is a private one. Public schools seem to have more accountability when they don't follow the same guidelines for consideration for all applicants.
