Just wondering if I need to get the Anesthesia Clinical Chairman's letter of rec from my institution? Is this is a prerequisite in every application?

Thanks!

Nope. I never got one. In fact, I didn't get any anesthesia letters from anybody at my school. My anesthesia letter came from an away rotation. The rest came from Peds and Family.

I am sure that most programs do not require a chairman's letter...but I do believe that some do...you would have to check the website of the particular program...I say this because I do believe that UPENN requires 3 LOR in addition to a Chairman's letter (at least that is what the website said if I am remembering correctly)

UPenn actually only requires a Chair letter if you're enrolled in another residency program. Not for graduating med students.

I think if you can get a Chair's letter, great. It's by no means necessary.

honestly.

just get a GOOD/SOLID letter. It doesnt have to be from a chair. Most likely these chairs just have form letters that they spit out (think about it, they're busy people with a lot to do).

I think other attendings can give a bit more perspective and can be more 'personal'. At the end you want a letter that has the reader going, "wow"...doesnt matter from who..

On my rotation, I was practically with a new attending everyday and never really popped anyone's eyes out of their heads with my scut/IV/tubing skillz. So, I got a letter from the chairman and another guy who both didn't really know me very well, but are well known at other places. Sometimes you don't have a guy or two who you worked a lot with and worked well with at the same time. If this doesn't happen, I would recommend chair letter and another well-known guy in your program and nationally. Just my .02
