Here's my situation: I grew up going to a D.O. in southern Idaho, but haven't seen him in almost a year. Now I live in Montana and have been shadowing my sister for a few months. She is the only practicing D.O. in this area, so my options are limited!

My question is, would it be O.K. for her to write a letter of recommendation for me? Or should I go back to my doctor in Idaho and have him write it. I don't want to bother him if it's not necessary.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I don't think its ok... Most of the 2ndry's say that your letters can't be from relatives, i think this falls under that category... Call DO's in the area(theres gotta be one w/in driving distance) and ask if you can shadow them, then ask for a LOR... Most of them understand your predicament! If not, then get one from an MD... good luck!!

I got mine without shadowing. He asked to talk to me in person. We talked for around 15 minutes and agreed to write me one. He said because of HIPPA he could not allow me to shadow. Hopefully no shadowing question will come up at my interviews.

I was able to shadow, but only for a day. The DO wrote my letter as well. Unfortunately, the duration of my shadowing experience came up and I imagine that discredited the LOR.

I think its a hard thing to hide unless you lie about it... On most of the secondary's they ask about your medically related experiences... Just a thought

Is it ohk if your in-laws write you LORs if they dont have the same last name? Because I have 5 of them wanting to... 4 D.O.s and 1 M.D...

I had a letter from an in-law. So far KCOM and VCOM say that they won't accept it. So I'm off in search of another letter. I would find someone else.

ask your sister for a referrel to someone who could write you a letter. chances are she has a professional relationship with other do's in the area and still knows people from school. maybe she can get someone to talk to you for a bit about your experience shadowing your sister and write a letter based on that. i'm currently shadowing my md brother, but he's been hooking me up with his do resources for letters. these family resources are great!

Hey all! Thanks for the replies! I'm taking your advice and gettin' hooked up with some other LORs from my sisters friends as well as my old doc. in Idaho. Thanks again for all your help, you are all too nice! Good luck to everyone. I hope we all get in! 🙂
