Hi all,

I've been thinking about asking my seminar professor for a LOR. For his class, I had to write three research papers and did one presentation for him so I feel like he knows my work pretty well. I received an A in both of my seminars for him. And I got to know him pretty well during the quarter since it was such a small class. Do you think that's okay or should I get a LOR from another professor? On a side note, I am also getting a LOR from my organic chemistry professor if that makes a difference... haha.

Thank you!

+1 although you should check each schools LOR requirements, but i do believe that a LOR from a seminar prof should be fine

+1. This is a much better idea for a non-traditional letter than some of the ideas that have appeared on here. 🙂

It's completely OK and that small fact won't carry much weight in the grand scheme of things. If it's a great letter, use it!

I hope LORs from thesis prof + geo prof is okay as well?

For the most part, yes. Imho, be careful using those that are not the actual prof for letters. Also, get to know the prof and set an appointment before they write the letter so that your letter is not just another "well he got an A in my class so he should get into medical school".

First, I am a returning student to the college campus after taking some time off due to deployments and also going to Paramedic school.

Here's a little story from this week: I met with my Organic Professor and wore a suit to the meeting, this was apparently a first for her and she was extremely honored by this rather simple action on my part. She made her surprise in my wearing a suit extremely well known, even to students there in her office hours. Showing honor is huge to me even by such a small gesture such as this, show them respect and your letter writers will remember this while writing your letter.

For me, I look at it as I am applying for Medical School not some random post-bacc program so if I expect to get in, then I should show respect and honor toward all of my letter writers and those that are helping me get there. Just my .02.

Aw shucks, I should've dressed a bit more formal...I just wore my black jeans and trench coat. My thesis prof has seen me with my sweatpants most of the time anyways...hopefully he doesn't comment on my dress code in the letter. I already asked them and I'm just waiting...

I seriously doubt that he'll comment on your appearance, most probably won't. Most letter writers are writing their letter to your benefit, so they will leave out negative information (I say most because there are some that will intentionally derogate students in their letter, just because they hate pre-med or didn't get in themselves. I know about this because our committee specifically mentioned an instance where they specifically instructed a professor that they would no longer accept their negative letters as it was unfair to students and the particular professor hence started refusing to write letters). I do think that it makes a better overtone though and for me I'm after getting as used to talking and being interviewed in a suit before the Fall as possible.
