Hi all, I have read a lot of threads regarding asking letter from the physician you shadowed, but none of them fits my situation. so here comes my problem.

I shadowed an ophthalmologist for 1 year during senior in high school. Then I head off for college. Now, 3 years later, no contact in between, I am a senior and I need some shadow experience. I emailed him and asked him if I can shadow him over the spring break. Surprisingly he remembered me and gave me the opportunity to shadow him for 4 days of the spring break. (Yay!)

So basically, I have known this doctor for quite a long time, but we didn't really have interaction continuously throughout the year. Is it ok that I ask him for a letter?

Thanks for any advice!

Just make sure you have the required faculty letters.

First, I hope you get your LOR from the Doc! I just want to use your situation to point out how important it is to keep in touch with mentors/doctors/observees throughout this entire game. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but let's learn from this situation. In this case, you still might get your LOR, however, some people out there will not be so fortunate.

Keep in touch with docs, DONT be annoying, try and observe, even if over a random holiday weekend or summer break, and your LOR will be all the better should you get it!

Remember, water those relationships!

thanks d712! im gonna try not to annoy my doc lol...

letters of rec from shadowing experiences are absolutely useless IMO....i wrote about this earlier and if i remember correctly many agreed with that assertion (i think the thread was about getting a LOR from a doctor with weak language skills)
