I have a couple quick questions about LOR's. If anyone can help that would be great.

1) Which is better for EM; a strong Surgery, Int Med or Fam Practice LOR? That would be in addition to an EM LOR, etc.

2) Also, do you send 4 LOR's to all programs or do you only send 3? Does it matter?

Generally, Medicine is considered the best non-EM letter. But overall EM docs like EM lORS. Some places "prefer" 4 but I dont think anyone requires more than 3.. I might be wrong on the last part. You probably have to look program by program for their requirements.

Thanks EF,

Is it detrimental to send more than 3 if I have 4 strong ones?

I dont think so but i have been told if you sent more than 3 some people say you cant follow directions, another PD said they ask for 3 but really want 4.. IMO if they are all wonderful send em ion the more people who say wonderful things about you the more likely there are to be true!!

Don't worry about 3 or 4, just submit ATLEAST 3 and hopefully one from an EM, and with that EM, preferably a SLOR/CORD Letter.

When we review candidates, it is actually a slight negative if none of the LORs are from EM.

Slight negative? Jeez, I'd think it was a huge red flag. I mean, who goes into ER with out rotating in the department? And who rotates in the department without getting a letter? Unless they really hated you, and then what are you going into ER for if you can't get along?

Yeah I said 'ER' so go screw yourself

I try to keep in mind that some people may not have realized they liked EM until later in their third year. Me, I knew before I went to med school I wanted to do EM, but its not so easy for others. Our best resident, a fellow DO PGY-3 at my program, wasn't sure if he wanted to do anesthesia or EM until he did his DO internship, so he didnt' hav eany LORs from EM.
