Pardon my ignorance,

I'm trying to schedule my fourth year and am planning on doing an away rotation in September. Assuming I get a good letter, it would be my 1st from an anesthesiologist. Is it possible to be offered interviews while a LOR is pending?

i did my anes sub-i in september too. The letter actually got delayed by a few weeks (due to late grade submission, secretary going on a 1 week vacation, and then the chair and assistant chair (who were supposed to sign the letter after the grade was in) going to the ASA meeting for almost a week) so the letter didn't go out until just around Nov 1st. But this was a fluke. . .the letter could have gone out early- to mid- october if everything worked as it should have, and that would have been perfectly fine.

That said, i did get most of my interviews (from my top choice programs too) while my anesthesia letter was still pending. however, i do believe this delay cost me at least one interview at a place i would have considered highly, because my application was not sent for consideration until it was complete. By the time my app was approved by the 3 or so faculty that reviewed it, all the interview slots were full, with a waiting list already being formed. Of course, i dont expect anyone decline interviews at this program. i wasn't too heartbroken, because i'd already gotten interviews at my top choices, but a lot of people were surprised.

So, if you do the anes rotation in sept, hound the people involved very soon after your rotation ends.

I got several interviews without ANY letters in. My anesthesia letter was my fourth, and last LOR, to get in and, by that time, I had received all my anesthesia interviews. Just make sure to get your application in early...by the first or second week of Sepetember. I turned in my CAF only ( no personal statement, no letters) on Sept. 8 and the offers started coming in the next day. Don't worry if your file isn't complete by Sept. 1--just get your CAF in and add the other stuff as you finish it.
