In my opinion, you shouldn't get them anything. I had this debate with some of my pre-med friends. To me, a Thank You note is enough. They went into education to help students succeed. Buying them lavish gifts is not serving the purpose or their overly inflated egos (in some cases) anyway. Stick with a well written Thank You on nice stationary.

I got mine boxes of chocolate... not too lavish, but nice enough to show appreciation. 🙂 Oh, and a thank you card too, of course.

It depends really... I was facing the same problem since I come from a small school and I was afraid of offending other profs if I got them different items(different values) from the same genre(like different bottles of wine). I decided to give gifts based on my gratitude for everything they have done, rather than just giving gifts based on LoR's. If you know your recommenders well enough, give them a gift. I'm a graduating senior anyway, so I picked out gifts. Anyway, alcohol always works well... unless they don't drink; gotta do some research on that.

I'm actually not sure that thank-you presents are appropriate for LORs. This is part of their job as professors. I totally understand wanting to give a gift as a token of appreciation (I buy thank-you gifts for everything), but these letters are based on merit. For profs to accept presents for LORs may reflect poorly on them. I say stick with thank-you notes.

Eh...I bothered my professors during spring break to do my LOR's and alot of them were writing them while they were away on vacay,so I felt like I had to give them something. I dont know how close you guys were to the people that wrote your letters, but I'd had at least 3 classes with each person that wrote mine and had a good relationship with each,so it seemed appropriate.

I think it may be considered bribery for a professor to accept a gift in exchange for a LOR. (at the least it is very unprofessional)

Not that I give a crap, I would bribe until the pigs fly if they let me, but one of my profs was offended when I offered something.

Whatever it takes to get in!

so people generally give gifts depending on how small their school is/ how close of a relationship they have to their professors??

It wasnt a bribing type situation like dddddsssmack insinuated above. it was a "i know youre on break and are going way out of your way to do this, and since ive known you for 3 years, this is a little something to say thank you."

I wasn't attacking you assssmmmieee, I was jsut saying what happened to me🙂
