I went to Ecuador for 6 weeks last Summer and am applying to medical school this year. While in Ecuador, I had an nurse write me a LoR (in Spanish), had the director (MD) of the clinic cosign it, had it translated by somebody I paid in Ecuador, then had it added to my LoR file.
As I am writing my PS now I am looking at how I choose MD as my path over everything else and am relying heavily on my experience in Ecuador to justify this, but am concerned that this might be harmful, especially if the letter is instantly discredited for being from a foreign country. How significant of a risk am I taking by doing this and do you guys have any recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Make sure you have clinical experience INSIDE the U.S. to go along with it.

If your experiences in Ecuador had a great impact on your decision, then it's a proper thing to address in your PS; however, medical settings there could be quite different from here. Like many things, I think that at some schools the LOR may work well, but flop at others, particularly if you had access to knowing what was written.

Ok thanks for the response. I do have quite a bit of clinical experience in the US and I signed the I will not read this waiver thing. The reason I went to Ecuador was because I wanted tog et more hands on experience that you cant get in the US to try to find a subdivision of medicine that was right for me, and it was there that I determined an MD would be best.
