Hi all--new, but long time lurker.
I've entertained the idea of going to med school for years, but I didn't really settle on it (i.e. start actively pursuing) until midway through my junior year. Unfortunately, because I hadn't been thinking about the process itself much, I hadn't ever built up relationships with my professors such that they would write me LORs. Talking to my old classmates, this seems pretty common and most instructors have either moved to a new institution or refused to write letters. So, suffice to say, I decided mid-application cycle to save myself the stress and take a gap year or two to get everything sorted out properly.
I went straight into working on a post-bac degree (neuropsychology) at my state school and got a full-time job as a CNA. My problem, however, still seems to be LORs. My PI is also the psych department pre-med adviser and he's told me that I'm not really eligible for a committee letter right now because I've only been with the school for a year. He's also said that it would be a red flag on my app to not have a letter from my undergrad institution. He understands my reasons for not getting one from them, but I have started to worry about that. I have arranged for one LOR from a non-science prof from my undergrad, but everyone else I've contacted hasn't been interested. Would it be so bad for me to stay at this school as a post-bac for another year (two total) to get my committee letter and only apply with the one, non-science letter from the other school?
