Hey all, I have a question about lors. I have 3 good letters from ophtho folks and 1 good letter from an IM guy.

I was going to do 2 ophtho and 1 IM with a supplemental. However, I have heard several times now that I should just use the 3 ophtho with 1 supplemental from IM. I know this isn't the normal process, but I have heard it several times.

What do you guys think?

Submit IM letter. Use Ophtho as supplement. They want to see you aren't just a good ophthalmologist.

I would read the application instructions from SF Match. If I remember correctly they strongly recommend/require one letter from third year clerkships.

LETTERS OF REFERENCE

Three (3) ORIGINAL letters of reference are required for review by the programs. No more, no less. It is recommended that residency applicants provide one letter from a core rotation. If you have requested a confidential letter, please indicate so on your CAS application form and ask the author to return the letter to you in a sealed envelope. DO NOT open the sealed envelopes. Non‐confidential letters can be included in your application open faced.

yeah, I knew that the 2 & 1 was suggested by SF Match. And I had planned on doing that, until I managed to get 3 solid (and pretty famous) ophthalmologists. A few different folks have told me to just use the ophtho letters, and that they don't really care about the other letters anyway.

Personally, I think it makes sense to use 2 & 1, but it may be stronger to use 3 ophtho.

I'm planning on using the stronger personal letter-research PI for 2+years-over an IM letter. I was told to go with the strongest and use the 2+1 recommendation if it seems equal.

Another question about LoR. I have my app done except for the LoR. They should come in by the end of July. Is this too late to sum it? Or, should I be on my letter writers case (kindly of course)

The end of July is great. Early even. Applications should be in by the third week of August.
