An OT has offered to allow me to observe her for a total of 20-30 hours in a hand therapy setting over the course of 3 weeks, but can't promise me any more. Would my low number of hours/short 3 weeks spent with her in this setting make it inappropriate to ask for a letter of recommendation at the end?

People who have gotten LOR's from OT's that they merely observed, how many hours did you observe in that setting?

I observed an OT for 26 hours and asked her to write me an LOR and she was more than happy to do it. I think as long as you develop some sort of relationship and offer to be helpful whenever you're observing, they're likely to help you out!

I shadowed an OT for around 12 hours (she was one of many) and she insisted she write a LOR because she said she thought I was a perfect fit for the profession and was so excited that I was choosing to pursue OT. I was a little unsure because I shadowed her one full work day as well as one 3 hour shift one weekend so wasn't sure if she knew enough about me or my potential but in the months after time with her, I realized she was super observant and remembered so many little details about my story and why I chose to pursue OT, I was very impressed.
