I’m about to ask my professor for a LOR now. I will be submiting primary with most of my school choices the first week of June. Most likely this LOR will not be in by then.

1) Can I add a LOR to a school after I applied to that school (when I submit primary) but before I submit secondaries?

2) What’s so wrong with applying to a school (but before submiting secondary) with a LOR that has not been received.

3) if I just apply to a throw away school just to get verified while my LOR writer writes the LOR (hopefully it will be received mid July), will that affect my chances at any school given that I’ll be working on secondaries at this time?

LoRs are important because schools won’t review your app until you are complete meaning you have everything you need.

1. Yes, but you can’t remove them.
2. LoRs not being received are what hold applicants from getting reviewed
3. Not sure what you are asking. Don’t apply to any throw away schools, because for one as you will find out in a few months, there are none and for two that could be your only acceptance. But none of what u said should hurt your chances, bc like I said before your app won’t be read until that LoR is received

Are apps typically read before or after secondary submission?

For almost every MD school (exception I know is Indiana U) apps are reviewed once the application is complete. That means:

1. You have a verified primary
2. Submitted secondary
3. Required LoRs - just their minimum to satisfy it
4. For some schools completion of the CASPER test
5. Mcat received
6. Payment of their application fee

So to answer ur question, apps are almost always read after u submit their secondary
