Hello,

I'm planning on applying for the next cycle once it opens in June! As of now I'm gathering all of my application needs so it's somewhat ready by the time the soft opening occurs in May. It seems that most schools require 3-4 letters of recommendation (professor, dentists, and the last two are up to you?) So far I have a professor who is highly respected at my university willing to write me a LOR. I tutor for his physics class and am a TA for him as well. I've also asked my advisor to write me one as he has personally seen my growth as I transitioned from high school to undergrad.

The main question I'm wondering is does the LOR from a dentist have to be from a general dentist? I have well over 100 shadowing hours from all specialties, but most of the hours are primarily general. An oral surgeon I shadowed is excited to write me letter as we had a genuine connection and even found out that we're from the same hometown. Personally I feel like his LOR would be much stronger than any of the general dentists that I've shadowed. Will this hurt me? Should I still ask one of the general dentist that I've shadowed even though it won't be nearly as good as the OMFS?

Go with the strongest letter possible (in your case, from the oral surgeon). Just don’t tailor your entire application as if your goal is OS. We generally don’t like when predocs claim a preference of a specialty before dental school.
