So I have a bit of a tough situation here with LORs. Any advice would be appreciated. I have 4 letters of rec, and need to pick 3. Here's the deal:

Letter #1: Medicine
Letter #2: Away rotation ophtho letter

Letter #3 could be either from an OB/GYN attending at my school, or from a clinical research fellow in ophtho who is not from the US but has done several fellowships and is working in a well renowned ophtho's office (where I am working as well). Both of these letter writers know me well. And no, I can't get a letter from the well renowned ophtho guy, I don't feel that I know him well enough.

The office for the research is in my city, and I don't have a letter from my dept. Does one letter have any more weight than the other (ie ob attending vs fellow)? Any advice? Thanks!

dear tubaboy,

why don't you feel that you can't get a LOR from this "well renowned ophtho" guy? are you not working in his lab? first of all, to quote my 6th grade gym teacher, "can't" isn't in the dictionary. and second of all, now IS NOT the time to be shy my friend. we have all been there and felt akward about asking for LORs, but this is how the game is played. go for it and ask! all he can do is tell you "no i can't write you a strong LOR" nothing lost and then you move on to plan B.

re: what carries more weight fellow or attending? ATTENDING!

good luck!

Tubaboy,

Did you do an Ophthalmology rotation at your own institution? If so, why don't you have a letter from there? I think it would look weird not having a letter from your own institution especially if you rotated through the department.
