Hi all,

I did an away rotation at a program I'm really interested in (let's call it program A) and am getting a letter from my attending there. Can I use this letter when applying to program B? My concern is that the letter highlights the fact that I was most interested in program A and pursued an away rotation there and therefore am not as interested in program B. Am I better off just using the letter in my application to program A and using home institution letters for all other applications?

Thanks for your input!

I'd say the most important thing is that you have as many glowing LOR as possible from full time faculty. If the letter from program A is stronger than the ones from your home institution, then I'd use it. If you think they're equal, then consider the reputation of program A and whether or not the letter from A comes from a well-known psychiatrist. If program A and/or the attending has a strong reputation, then I'd still use that letter.

Regarding your concern, program B will know that you did an away rotation at A regardless if you have a letter from them or not. Many students do away rotations and this shouldn't have impact when applying to other programs.
