I recently received what I believe is a very strong LoR for a visiting clerkship I completed. I was wondering if 1) Is it too late to deassign one of my letters and assign this new one to programs? 2) Is it ok to assign the letter to programs outside of the institution where I did the away?

Thanks for the help.

De-assign? I'm assuming you've already submitted your app and that all of your programs have downloaded your full app for now. 4 LORs is the max per program, unless otherwise noted specifically by the program.

Once you submit 4 LORs and they are already downloaded, it's a done deal. You can't de-assign anything to swap out for a new LOR. You can only add LORs, given that you originally only submitted three.

The letter will mostly benefit the hospital where you did that away rotation. Especially when the hospital is familiar with your attending and can better characterize your performance in their setting. As for submitting that to other programs, it really depends on the context of your LOR. If it was a LOR for general programs, then I would submit it to others as well.

I believe you can still click one out and add another one. The program may have seen the old one, but I think the new would get transmitted.

You would have to check with aprogdirector.

I had a LoR that got uploaded very late. I thought that letter was important. So, I called up a program that showed interest in me and asked them if there was a way out. They suggested that referee could either send a letter or email to them and they'd consider it.

May be worth giving a shot in a few programs that you are interested in.

good luck,

Apply Pressure,

If you did the visiting clerkship at a "top" program like hopkins, one of the harvard hospitals, ucsf, etc, then I highly recommend that you add this letter - especially if you think it is a very strong letter. This is because 1) it is proof that you are able to work and excel not only in your home program, but in other rigorous hospital systems, with all types of people and that you adapt and learn quickly. 2) if it is a top program, chances are someone might know the letter writer or view it with additional weight. You can probably "deassign" one of the letters now that it is downloaded already, then add a fifth. But I would just ask each program how to proceed in particular since some programs discourage extra letters while others don't care. Congrats and good luck! :luck:
