So I am current applicant who has two letters that are basically appropriate for any specialty, however another is from a surgeon who really thinks that I belong in his field. I know his letter is strong and represents my character well, so is it inappropriate to use it for another specialty? I have already assigned this letter via ERAS, but it has not been uploaded by my deans office- if i deselect it now for certain programs, will it be as if it was never there?

Thanks for your help!

Depends what the letter says, and depends on the field. If you are applying to psychiatry residency programs and you have 3 great letters from psychiatry attendings saying how wonderful and thoughtful etc you are, and then you have this letter from your surgery attending saying "She's an awesome surgeon, she's hardcore about medicine and she knows her stuff, she should be a surgeon, what a shame we are losing her to psychiatry", then it would add a lot. Because now we know that not only would you make a great psychiatrist, you won't make us look bad on your medicine rotations during your intern year and you will be able to handle medical acuity on the psychiatric ward.

I figured at the very least it would show that I am well rounded- thanks for the input. For better or for worse I am going to submit this letter along with the other ones- I am also doing my sub-I right now, and plan on getting an EM specific letter very soon for submission at a later date.
