So my LOR writer told me to ask her for a letter at the end of April/early May when classes got out. I sent her an email on May 2nd with no response, and sent an email this morning to an automated email response that says: I will be out of the office until August 17th.......

What should I do? Should I try to contact them in some other way (I know a friend that has her cell phone number)? The has known me for 5 years and has written me a couple letters in the past.

Sounds like you'll likely get a very strong LOR from this person. Gotta get in touch with him/her somehow, it'll be worth it even if it may be mildly uncomfortable to get ahold of him/her.

I know she is going to be one of my stronger LOR. I feel awkward trying to contact her outside of a professional setting but I am counting on her letter and she agreed to write it... She may actually have it completed already, just needs to submit.

Would getting her number and sending a text message be more appropriate than getting her number and calling? I could also send a facebook message lol....

I've had professors text me, but I would never text them first. Call and leave a voicemail if that's your last chance.

FYI, auto response doesn't mean they won't read it not get back to certain emails. It just gets them off the hook for the listed time. Many colleagues and professors that I know respond still check the emails, filter, and respond to certain emails requiring attention.

I would call your LOR's office number and leave a voicemail sometime this week. If she doesn't respond by next week, I would send a follow-up email next week. If her office isn't too far of a drive for you, you could try to swing by at some point as well. I personally wouldn't contact her by her cell phone since she didn't give you her number directly.
