I have about 4 LOR's set up. An MD(cardiologist), a DO(internal med/fp), a science professor (organic chem) and a former employer. However, I do have a few ties to the Governor of my home state. I have had dinner with him once, and although he doesn't know me well, I was wondering if I could ask him for a LOR. Would this be a good idea, since I really love my state schools, or would I be better off to leave it out since we don't know each other very well? My cousin got a LOR from him to go into dentistry and she got in, so I was just wondering if it might help me as well. Thanks in advance!

i don't think it'll help you all that much. if you don't know him that well, he'll write you a cookie cutter LOR. and the fact that it's more of a personal reference, which won't be that influential for it to help. your cousin probably got in more based on merit than the governor's letter.

I think think it depends on what level you know the governer. If you've worked for him or contributed something, then the letter would be totally legit. If you've only met him, then the LOR would seem like you're trying to pull some strings.
