Hey guys, I had a question regarding the LOR type for the AMCAS (ie letter packet, individual letter). Okay, so like alot of other people, I send all of my LORs from professors, doctors, etc. into the my school's "career center" that holds all the letters until I need them. When I order the career center to send all my letters to AMCAS, would this be considered as a "letter packet" since ALL my letters are being sent, or would it be considered as "individual letters"? i would appreciate any help, thanks!

It depends. lol

If you want to send them individually so that not all medical schools receive all of your letters, then you should input them individually. This method will cost you however much your career center charges FOR EACH LETTER.

However, if you want to send all of your letters to all of the medical schools, sending them in a "letter packet" is not only going to save you time and money, but it is very much more preferred than having individual letters. If you plan to use this option, make sure you make a LOR request on AMCAS.

Sample:
Letter title: Letter packet
Institution name: [University X]
Primary contact/author first name: Career Center
Primary contact/author last name: Letter service
Email: Your career center letter services' email address
Phone: (000)letter service phone #
Address: Use your career center's address

you get the point. The additional authors should be left blank. Now you have a LOR request form, which you need to send to your letter service to be included in your letter file. When you send the letter packet, make sure that LOR request form is included somewhere amongst other letter writers.

I hope this helps. Don't hesitate if you need any other assistance.

hey thanks for the reply! it was really helpful!

one question, why would the "additional authors" be left blank? I thought the point of having that part was so that you can tell which authors/writers make up the packet.

but nonetheless, I will probably do the "letter packet", thanks!

You leave it blank because it's optional. You CAN input all of your letter writer's names, but what difference will that make? You career center will include that on the cover sheet anyways, and on top of that, the letters will be included in the packet. The people reading those LORs to give you secondaries/interviews don't need to know the names on the request form (for the two reasons stated above).

I think the main purpose of that is if you have one letter that have multiple co-signers. For example, if you have three different professors (that taught you one class) write one collective letter. You can decide who you want your primary author to be, but two other professors can be added as the additional authors.

Just as a side note, I was confused about this yesterday, but read the information on my career center letter services' website. That's why it's still fresh in my mind 😀
