I'm taking 13 units but 5 classes account for those units. I'm considering dropping 4 of those units to make my Tuesdays and Thursdays completely free. In place of class I will be spending 8 hours a week at a local hospital. In addition I now actually have time to go to interviews (It takes me 2 hours to get to the nearest airport). I'm worried that medical schools might look down on me for only taking 9 units this semester. I'm also sad to see that I will only be getting a Biochemistry major when I'm just 2 classes away from a Biology major. But I don't feel like I need the Biology major and I think I DO need more clinical experience and frankly I think I'd enjoy the clinical experience more.

Any ideas on this? I'm going to be talking to my advisor and the professor of the class that I'm dropping tomorrow.

A double major doesn't really help you. Focus on doing well in your primary interest and give time to doing the things that will really prepare you for your future (volunteer work, research, EC's, ect.)

2 classes?? and you want to drop?! if you dont get this double major you will regret it. all of that time spent working on these majors and you drop it now? trust me, i was in the same position as a double major and im so glad that i didnt drop. plus, how many things are they going to let you do in the hospital? it can get boring sometimes. also, if med schools see that you are doing a bunch of hours now that you are applying its not going to be more impressive than just doing a normal amount of hours. just do 4 hours on the weekend.

I disagree. It would be a double major in bio and biochem. All that time? I'm pretty sure a lot of those classes are overlap anyway. I was going to double major in history and music, but I had to stop the music, so to speak, with only one more class to go. These aren't exactly subjects that overlap with each other, much less science courses. Furthermore, it isn't like he's just goofing off.

If the hospital experience could be potentially good, I'd say go for it. I volunteered in the ER of a large metro public hospital and it was pretty cool. They were so busy, they didn't really care what I did and I ended up observing a lot of procedures. One resident was so tired he almost let me suture up a guy! He came to his senses before I could wreak any havoc, though. 🙁

I talked to my professor this morning and he pretty much told me that I wouldn't get much from doing the hospital work and that I can do it later. He said that I will often not be able to control whether my interview falls on a Friday or a Thursday and that I didn't give myself enough credit in being able to make up for missed classes. I decided to take his advice. Thank you to bewitched, supa, and xanthines for replying to my thread.

Also to xanthines: Which do you prefer? Theobromine or Caffeine? Which one does your dog prefer?
