im a freshman...and ive got a relatively light courseload, im doing extremely well without doing much work at all. i got so used to the light work that when i get larger assignments i freak. i cant seem to keep myself motivated. and im well aware that im going to be getting alot more work and that i should just give in and get used to putting in long hours..im having a real hard time making this transition...any tips? what do you do to keep yourself on top of your game? i dont have have to get a job, i dont do anything but school, i have the perfect situation and i just feel reallll lazy....how can i whip myself into shape? HELP!

Motivational tactics are highly individual, but I somtimes find it helpful to break larger assignments down into smaller, more manageable chunks. It can help to look at them almost like separate projects. Do one part and then go and have some fun to reward yourself -- chill with your friends, work out -- then come back and tackle a separate piece. If you look at the project as a whole, it can be so daunting that you just wind up putting it off and making it harder for yourself. Also take comfort in the fact that the pressure is off during freshman year -- it takes a while to get into the swing of things, and most people have to reinvent their study and work habits from high school, which can take some time...

maybe get a part-time job so you learn to appreciate your free time and hence use it for studying/maintaining your good grades.

what i used to do: go onto the website of a med school you are interested in. look at the happy students. look at the fancy buildings and hospitals. go ahead, fantasize. imagine being a medical student.

then, sit back and realize that, if you don't get your ass in motion, that's as close as you're going to get.

worked every time. 😉

jwtaylor, why are you freaking out over your own situation? you're doing well, despite not doing a lot of work. if i were you, i would just enjoy it for the time being. when things get harder, you will learn to adjust; it's much harder to adjust *in advance*.

you're also probably not as lazy as you believe. you're only a freshman... yet you've already found SDN and are already concerned about your motivation. truly lazy people probably wouldn't give a s*t at this stage 😛 .

Don't worry too much as a freshman. When i first started college I got so frustrated with my genetics class I decided to quit biology and become a teacher. Then I realized I hated teaching. To find out if medicine is really the thing for you try out some other options and see if medicine is really your passion. If its not find out what is your passion.
