well,i am actually a student who has taken medicine as one of my greatest option. but being a first year student it is tough and i have generally no idea how to study or the approach. i have never felt like this before and i dunno why. i tried to understand all the pathology, micobiology ,immunology and stuff like that... but i just can't remember the facts. i feel frustrated everytime there is a mini test. i would either get a mere pass or fail. how can people really get everything in to the brain. the facts are just too much. i dunno what to study or how. but i know i am lost.

wow.. 😳 it's overwhelming
are you from the philippines? if so, you've just been done with first year?
i'm not first year yet, but i am already feeling dread at starting...
when i feel like you do, i usually just try to refocus on why i am doing it (like why medicine?) and how wonderful it would feel when i'm done or in caring for a patient, the feeling of relief that you've helped somebody or even just tried to make the patient feel better about himself before he came to you...

dunno, really, i guess just try to remember your motivation... 🙂
God bless! :luck:

Motivation... everyone's desire...
when someone drops down once a while he or she may be motivated..
but once it is all the time...
things isn't what it seems= learning helplessness step in..
i dunno why there is only people reviewing but only one reply.. but there is one thing that i know is that people no longer cares anymore..
they just pop in read your messages and just say "yeah serve him right who cares about him anyway"
and i can see you people call yourself "care workers for the future"
maybe i am wrong for saying this...
maybe you people are just speechless and dunno what to say
but i just dunno...
anyway i just like to say thank you for the only reply
although i know u r right but i think what matter is your heart..
what u think of, and your motivation.

Hi,
I am so sorry to hear your situation. If people are not responding to this thread, they may be busy. Anyway, Kenny, Just know that you are not alone. There are people just like you failing their exams, etc in medical school. Let me remind you...this is MEDICAL SCHOOL we are talking about. Some say it is the hardest graduate program one can get into and stay in. Just the idea that you are in medical school means that you are very intelligent! Anyway, Go to USTLRU.com, and read the threads in the Faculty of Med and Surgery, mostly everyone is complaining of barely passing or more often than not failing their tests. On a good note, there are many people worse off than you. At least you are passing some of your exams.
Nevertheless, it gives me great pleasure to know that these people help each other out, even by just talking to each other...that is a great FIRST step. Anyway, good luck and as that song by Aaliyah said "Just dust yourself up and try again."
P.S. Honestly, Kenny we do care, since we are all in the same boat! That is why everyone in this SDN forum does their best to help each other out by sharing vital information and advices which can help their fellow Filipino medical students,pre-meds, interns and residents. If we are all competing against each other, then why are we all in this forum in the first place?

don't worry, i've been in your situation before (well many times to the point that i contemplated of quitting. but heck! i'm not a quitter). maybe you're still having difficulty adjusting to the reality of being a medical student. you don't have to base your performance entirely on your grades or whether you get a mere pass or fail. it's what and how much you have learn that is the most important in the long term and how you're going to apply them to your patient. remember that the best doctors are not necessarily the brightest ones nor the top students of their batch. it's natural to forget some concepts as time goes by (heck! i also suffer that and i tell you you're not alone).

remain focused and hopeful to yourself that you're gonna survive medicine. if others believe in you, then you should also believe in yourself.

just a lurker here...

In terms of being frustrated and not passing exams....you might want to try different approaches to learning the material.

Maybe you are a picture learner: so draw some pics and labels and add as much info as you can (esp. for immuno and path). I for instance, am a "picture" learner and have images in my mind of the human body and the diseases that affect it. Getting a set of markers/coloured pencils never hurts either!

Maybe you are a hearing learner: tape the lectures and re-listen to them on your travels to and from med school.

Maybe you are a "writing" learner: you need to write everything down. Get some scrap paper and good pens and start writing!

Try dividing the information into chunks, it makes the info less overwhelming and learnable. Also, you might want to try charts. Draw them yourself or find review books that have them. (i.e. for micro: list and compare all the gram negatives together, all the gram positives etc...)

We learned when we were young that the 3R's of school were: Reading, wRiting, and aRithmatic

Did anyone ever tell you, in medical school, the 3 R's are: Review, Review, Review?

Good luck,

A.
