Hi, I'm a freshman at a top 20 university and lately I've been very concerned about my grades. I had been maintaining an A- in chemistry but a recent mistake in lab has dropped that to a B. The way I see it now, if I maintain those grades I will end my first semester with a 3.65 cGPA and a 3.3 sGPA. How can I raise my GPA so that by the time I apply I'm competitive? Are there any specific studying strategies I can use?
You're going to be okay. You have time to get your sGPA up again -- but you will need to work hard.

How many units per semester are you taking, what % are science classes?

Thanks for your reassuring answer. I'm currently taking 16 credit hours with 8 being science classes (so 2 classes). I'm taking the typical gen bio/gen chem schedule. I actually really enjoy chem, so much so that I changed my major to biochem. It's currently finals week and I know what I have to do to get the grade I want in chemistry. If things go according to plan ill end with a 3.58 cGPA and a 3.5 sGPA. I've realized I need to just chalk up this semester as a learning experience, since I can pinpoint exactly where I fell off track and plan accordingly for next semester.

Thanks again 🙂
Fantastic. You've got a good balance of science and non-science courses.

Let me know how your semester GPA was at the end!
