I'm lost. I have no idea what i want to do with my career. I love the medical field but i also love hotels. Science has always interested me and i always that about becoming a doctor or a vet. I’m not good at math at all. I think that’s what’s holding me back. I don’t want to do major surgery just minor stuff. I’m more interested in Lab stuff and medicine. I know about internal medicine but what other careers specialize in that?

Thank you in advance!!

What grade are you in?

Here is a little secret...the majority of people change their major and their career plans the first couple years of college. In other words, there are alot of people in the same boat as you.

Shadowing and volunteering is a good way to see what you like. Try volunteering in an ER or shadowing a doctor for a few days and see how you like it. Likewise, work in a lab, shadow a vet, etc.

Also, math isn't a very big part of medicine. You will need to make it through calculus in college, but beyond that their isn't much math beyond simple stuff.

If you do choose to become a physician you will need to:

Go to 4 years of college
Go to 4 years of medical school
Then 3-5 years of residency (where you specialize)
Then you might do an option additional year which is called a fellowship

In physician specialties here is a list of the major specialties:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_medical_specialty_colleges_in_the_United_States

Also note that when you get to college you will need to have a high GPA to get into medical school. It is very competitive and the "vast majority" of people who are pre-med at the start of college will not end up in medical school.

Finally one last thing to mention...
Alot of people choose to go into the medical field but decided the 10 years of training to become a physician is too long for them. Other careers in medicine to consider include:
Physical Assistant
Nurse Practitioner
Nurse Anesthetist
Audiologist
Dentist
Physical Therapy
Audiology
Pharmacy
etc..

It's normal to not know exactly what you want to do as a career when you're a highschool student. You don't have to know what you want to be right now. The key is to go to college, and hopefully figure out what interests you the most in college. I agree that shadowing is helpful in figuring things out. Another thing is to stop telling yourself you're not good at math. That's a defeatist mentality and will surely come true. Instead ask yourself how you can be good in math. If you decide on medicine, the process of figuring out what kind of doctor you want to be is also a long process. It takes time and experience. Good luck!
